I am endlessly amazed by the creativity of digital influencers, particularly when it comes to creating beautiful images. One of my personal favorite types of photos and a very popular style is a flat lay picture. A flat lay is a photo of objects, clothing, food or anything else taken from above. Flat lays are the Internet’s version of a still life.
This video from Drew Scott guides you step by step on everything you need to create a perfect flat lay photo.
Drew’s Tips for Flat Lay Photography:
- Take photos on a solid, plain background. White backgrounds, beds, or self-made backgrounds from products like cardboard can work well. You just want to make the objects stand out as much as possible.
- There can be different types of flat lays. One type can be centered around 1 specific object or you can also arrange several different types of objects to create a mood or theme around the photo.
- Objects you can use include: trays, pillows, throws, jewelry, sunglasses, laptop, beauty products, decor items, notebooks, clothing, makeup, fragrances, books, magazines, food items, etc.
- Play around arranging and re-arranging your flat lay and look at what other people are doing to gain inspiration.
- Use photo editing apps to add filters, brightness, sharpness, etc.
